Lavender Blackberry Scones

IMG_1354

My mom isn’t afraid of spiders.  I am deathly, unreasonably, irrationally afraid of spiders.  My Mom is the only one that will walk me down the spider-ridden stairs to my car when I stop by for family dinner.  Ok… to be fair, my dad will walk me down the stairs too, but it took a lot of irrational screaming about spiders to make him understand my crazy brain.

I figure I’ll have to get over my fear of spiders before I become a mom myself.  Is that normal?  Does a fear of spiders dissipate during pregnancy or will I constantly be calling my mom every time I’m about to vacuum a spider (not that I’ve actually ever done that) (sorry spiders).

Because my mom saves me from spiders well into my thirty plus years on this planet, she has earned warm, lavender-scented scones.  She’s actually earned so much more… but scones will have to do for now.

Spiders to scones.  Yea… we just did that.

Tossing cold butter into flour might be one of my favorite past times.  Breaking butter down into flour and sugar is a baking meditation.  Adding fragrant dried lavender just adds to the zen moment.

IMG_1216

Sometimes food is best color coordinated.  I like pale lavender paired with deep purple blackberries.

IMG_1235

Some berries are sliced in two.  Some berries are left whole.

The idea is to get a big heaping bite of warm berry in almost every bite of scone.

IMG_1261

Oh man… can I please write an entire book about biscuits and scones?

Please say yes.

IMG_1295

Scone rounds are brushed with a bit of beaten egg and sprinkled generously with sugar.  The idea is to create a lightly browned slightly crisp scone top.

Baked!

I usually insist on eating these just as soon as they come out of the oven.  With extra butter and blackberry jam?  Heck yes.  Be like me.

If you’re not going to eat them right from the oven, maybe you want to make them extra pretty!  Erica from HonestlyYUM made this precious tiered serving stand.  That DIY is coming your way tomorrow!

These scones are tender, flakey, not too sweet, but studded with sweet summer berries and fragrant lavender.  They’re more on the flakey side, more flakey than dense which is how I prefer is my scones.  Less dense?  Maybe we can have two instead of one!  That’s smarts.  I hope you love them.  I hope your mama loves them too.  Spiders… no!

Lavender Blackberry Scones

makes 10 to 12 scones

Print this Recipe!

3 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon dried lavender

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

1 large egg, lightly beaten

3/4 cup cold buttermilk

1 cup fresh blackberries(you can used thawed and drained berries from the freezer although the scones will have a more purple color)

1 beaten egg and granulated sugar for sprinkling on top before baking

Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 400 degrees F.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, sugar, lavender, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.  Cut in butter (using your fingers or a pastry cutter) until mixture resembles a coarse meal.  Work the butter into the dry ingredients until some of the butter flakes are the size of peas and some are the size of oat flakes.    In another bowl, combine egg and buttermilk and beat lightly with a fork.  Add to flour mixture all at once, stirring enough to make a soft dough.  Fold in the blackberries.

Turn out onto a floured board and knead about 15 times.  Roll or pat out into a 1-inch thickness.  Cut into 2-inch rounds using a round cutter or cut into 2×2-inch squares.  Reshape and roll dough to create more scones with excess scraps.    Place on an ungreased baking sheet.  Brush lightly with beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated sugar.   Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown on top.  Serve warm.  Scones are best the day they’re made, and though they can be frozen and lightly reheated in the oven if you need a future treat.

  1. Hi Joy! I have never stopped thinking about this gorgeous brunch! I am throwing a garden tea for a very dear friend. Since there is so much to bake, I’m trying to sort what I can do ahead. I’m always afraid of freezing things. If I do, I was wondering if its best to bake and then freeze these scones or freeze the shaped unbaked dough and bake off the morning of? Thank you so much for sharing your many many talents!!

  2. I just ate one of my scones just barely cooled out of the oven and it was delicious! I added some just-barely-still-OK blueberries instead of blackberries, and they work perfectly. Thank you again Joy for making my house smell awesome and my belly happy!

  3. I love this recipe so much! Over the last few months, I’ve have mixed it up at different points with raspberries, blueberries, pecans, walnuts and cinnamon. I could bake other breakfast items, but I just keep coming back to these. Thank you so much for sharing this one!

  4. I made these minus lavender, and they are ao yummy! Not as pretty as yours, my blackberries were fresh from the farmers market so they were really juicy, making my dough kinda wet and the scones a bit more purple. Also forgot the egg wash and sugar at the end. I am making lemon curd to go with too…mmm!

  5. These tasted delicious, but how do you keep the blackberries from exploding into a purple mess while kneading the dough?

  6. OMG!!! These are wonderful, thank you for sharing this recipe. This is the first time I have used lavender in a recipe, what a nice surprise. My husband & I both love them!!

  7. I haven’t made scones in quite a while, but they’re so easy to whip up and so delicious, especially right out the oven. I just might make these tomorrow morning, but with strawberries instead of blackberries :)

  8. These look amazing! I am obsessed with scones and I just ordered culinary lavender for the first time. I’m so excited to make your recipe! I need to ask, how do you measure your flour? Do you weigh it, sift it, use a spoon to fill the measuring cup, or just scoop it with the cup? All those ways of measuring produce completely different amounts of flour. I wish there was a standard way… or maybe there is and I don’t know it. ;)

  9. I made these and they were absolutely delicious! Even better with clotted cream and jam! Plus the lavender makes the house smell amazing. Thanks Joy for such a tasty recipe!!

  10. I just remembered the lavender in my cupboard last night and thought I should do something with it, so this is perfect! Thanks so much!

Regarding spiders, it’s sort of a cliche, but often learning more about a “scary” animal helps you get over your innate reaction. As a little girl, I was terrified of insects, but now I’m a biologist doing a project on crickets, and I find them adorable (though I’m still not a huge fan of cockroaches. . .). Spiders are NOT insects, but the fears people have are similar, so you might try going to the Insect Zoo at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County to see some bugs up close in a controlled environment. I went once while visiting the area, and it was amazing!

  11. These were delicious, but I ended up smashing all of the blueberries while kneading them into the dough….is there a technique to do so more *ahem* gently?

    Tips, Joy?

Also, I love your blog and try your recipes often! Thank you for the goodness :)

  12. Where can I buy lavender? Is it the same lavender that you can buy at TJ’s in the flower department? Also, can I use any substitutions here? Thanks.

  13. Just wanted to let you know that I made these scones this morning for my mother for mother’s day, and they were just delicious! I followed the recipe exactly. However I may have added too many blackberries (whole carton…my batter was blue! whoops!), but they ended up tasting so great. Loved the hint of lavender as well – not over powering, but could still definitely taste it. Most importantly, however is that my mother thought they were really delicious as well. Thank you again for the recipe! :)

  14. What a fabulous flavor pairing–romantic and delicious. Blackberry season is months away in the Pacific Northwest right now, but I imagine these would be equally wonderful with blueberries. Can’t wait to try. …Susan

  15. I just made these scones this morning and they turned out great! I subbed in frozen blueberries because that’s what I had on hand (didn’t bother to thaw) and it worked out nicely. I loved the smell of the dry ingredients after the lavender was added. Mine aren’t quite as pretty in cute little rounds but I think if I’d rolled the dough a bit thinner they would have stayed more shapely. Doesn’t affect flavor though! Yum!

  16. I love scones and my mom is the biggest fan of black berries! She calls them the nectar of the gods, haha. I would love to make these however I have one teeny weeny problem: I’m allergic to lavender. I know, i know. My poor mother has put up with no lavender candles, teas, dish soaps, hand lotions, bath salts, soaps, perfumes, laundry detergent…it’s surprisingly a rather annoying allergy for anybody who likes lavender that’s around me. Anyhow, would it terribly ruin the flavor to leave out the lavender? Thanks!

  17. The question isn’t why are you afraid of spiders, but why isn’t everyone else. I made my co-worker get rid of them for me. One co-worker just trained her 2 year old son to chase them down for her. Don’t fret.

  18. OMG I am so with you, soo scared of spiders!! These scones look amazing ahh I have been meaning to have a tea party with my nieces maybe I will try to make this, looks like it would pair perfectly with a nice cup of tea.

  19. These are so gorgeous… It’d be great if you would post your recipes in metric. It’s so much faster and easier to use a scale.

  20. These look amazing! I’m going to make them for breakfast this week end, can’t wait!!!! Thnak you for another delicious recipe :-)

  21. Wanted to say, I made the Lime Berry Bundt Cake…..OMG!!! Best bundt cake EVER!!! My mind immediately started thinking of what other things could be put into the basic batter….it was so moist, so I’m thinking the sky’s the limit! When I have time, I will try some other additions.

As for the scones…haven’t tried them yet, but lavender is my favorite scent, & I’m always happy to see recipes using lavender, since I have a 4oz bag of food grade lavender (had no idea how large a 4oz bag, which sounded so small, would be…I have A LOT of lavender)! And, since scones are my favorite biscuit type treat, I can’t wait to try these!!!

Thanks, Joy, for sharing the recipes. Sure helps out with my schedule…no time to search for good recipes, and I have found that yours are always good!!! Have a great day! Cyndi

    1. oh Cyndi! thank you so much for this comment! i’m so happy that you had success with the Lime Berry Bundt! it’s such a great basic recipe! i feel like you could throw anything in there? white chocolate and lavender? chocolate chips and orange! go for it! (avoid weird things like taco meat). haha! happy baking!

  22. I can confirm a minimum of two to three purchases of your biscuit and scone cookbook. One for me, one for my friend who is trucking through all of your biscuit and scone recipes, and another for my mom who is crazy in love with your bacon brown sugar biscuits.
Warm berries in every bite…oh man, what are you doing to us?!

  23. The scones sound delicious – I love the sprinkle of sugar on top and I hear you on colour-coordinating flavours!

And yes, I have an irrational fear of spiders too and have so far relied on mum, dad, older siblings, friends, housemates and boyfriends to protect me from the creepy crawlers. No idea what I will do when I have children but I am hoping that my desire to not look ridiculous in front of, say, a 5 year old boy, when a spider appears will be stronger than my irrational fear of spiders!

Oh and that dress in the last picture is absolutely stunning on you!

  24. Spiders or no spiders….one’s Mom definitely deserves these scones! :-) They look and sound AMAZING! Thankfully, though, I have no fear of spiders. Well, except (slightly) for the huge, hairy semi-poisonous Wood Spiders I’d sometimes see growing up. Daddy Long Legs, no problem! I even “saved” (ha, ha) a guy friend of mine from a Daddy Long Legs once (they are such a sweet, highly innocuous spider). Anyway, you are not alone. MANY people have a fear or spiders (or snakes, like Indiana Jones!). :-)

  25. Yaaayyyy!!! Yes, color-coordinated scones! Come into my stomach…we can be friends. PLUS and Ditto I’m calling spider cruelty services on you…vacumming? Sheesh – they die so much more humanly with a gallon of wasp spray and an old sneaker.

  26. These scones are not only beautiful but they sound amazingly delicious. I am definitly going to try these. The lavendar and blackberry together is a great combo! And just so you know, the spider-panic does not go away! I have a 5 yr old son who kill them for me!! I’m so glad he doesn’t mind or else we would have an issue : )

    Danielle xo

PS Lovely photos! This looks as if it was an awesome day!!!

  27. From what I understand (as I am not a mother either), it’s not so much that you lose the fear, it’s that you are taken over my such a maternal protectiveness that the spider/bug doesn’t even stand a chance. So says my sister.

And I mean, can you write a whole cookbook of biscuits and scones. Because it would be on my bookshelf in an instant.

  28. Oh please DO write a book with just scone and biscuit recipes!! I’d be yours forever. Amen. I cannot wait to make these scones. Yum!

  29. Question about these: I made your blueberry scones a few weeks ago, and I had a lot of difficulty incorporating the blueberries. As I tried to mix them in/form a dough, many of the blueberries popped. This made the dough wet and thus my scones were kind of gummy… not good for scones! I want to try this recipe but I am afraid that the same thing might happen. Suggestions?

    1. great question elizabeth! so… i incorporate my berries while the dough is still shaggy. so i’ll pour in the buttermilk, stir together about 3 to 4 times, then add the berries while the dough is still unincorporated and very shaggy. does that make sense?

  30. Your children will not fear spiders, they will want to save you from them! You will have to save them from the monsters under the bed, homework, and green vegetables.

  31. These scones look beautiful. My mom really likes blackberry jam, so she would probably enjoy eating these :)

  32. Joy honey! I’m from the scream loudly with rubber slipper in hand camp when is comes to any bug. Don’t be sorry, to tenderhearted commenters that’s just to bad. Those things are going to bite me if given a chance. Oh, and the scones are delightful.

  33. The scones look amazing and perfect for Mother’s Day! I also really like the photo of you, Joy. You look lovely and totes stylish!

  34. Beautiful scones – I love the whole lavender-purple color scheme. That’s a lovely cake stand too. And lastly, your spider-fighting mom sounds amazing.!

    1. Many health food stores carry it. You can always find it on Amazon or elsewhere online. I recently found dried lavender at Cost Plus World Market.

  35. I too amm unreasonable scared of spiders. But only because they look so cunning and smart. Most bugs are just repeatedly crashing on windows but spiders the way they move those little legs and dangle around….its just not right.

  36. beautiful combination of blackberry and lavender. i just made mother’s day cupcakes with dried lavender frosting. i guess something about the pretty purple lavender buds screams mom :)

  37. These look absolutely beautiful. I love the addition of lavender. I’m sure they taste fabulous with butter and honey as well. Since, well, honey makes everything incredible.

In my family, my mother kills spiders, my father saves them and puts them outside. Which doesn’t solve the problem of spiders existing. I’m about to graduate college and I still scream every time I see one.

  38. I’m a mom, but my husband is definitely not a baker. I will certainly be making these for MYSELF on Sunday. Love the look of this recipe. Blackberry + Lavender = Yum.

  39. These would be awesomer (if even possible) with a dollop of clotted cream! On spiders, I sometimes hear a scream from my daughters room and ill go in and she’s cowering under the blanket pointing a small finger at an even smaller spider on the ceiling…

  40. Yummy! These look wonderful!

And yes, you can most definitely write a book all about biscuits and scones. I am a crazy fiend for your biscuits~ so much that I always make extra and always share them with everyone at work. d^_^b

  41. I don’t go out of my way to have conversations with spiders, but I am not terrified of them like I was when I was younger. Maybe it’s an age thing? You are VERY young by my standards. HAH!

    love the lavender/berry combo…

  42. Hee. THIS is why I want to be your and shutterbean’s Token Biologist.

I will gladly remove spiders, wasps, snakes, MICE (yup, including Palm Springs mice), whatever, from any place you are gathering, and the (non-human) animals will also benefit, by being gently escorted out v. squashed like Governor Brown’s bug. =)

I need to go buy berries! Am planting lavender this year, so should be stocked with that herb, soon–SUPER excited about that. Thanks for the inspirash. xoxo

  43. I love scones, & these look and sound amazing! I too am terrified of spiders, & vacuuming them up with a long attachment is my favored method of making them disappear. I feel no guilt about this. :)

  44. I used to vacuum spiders too… until I thought about the spider laying eggs inside my vacuum and then there’s a million spider babies in my vaccum. My crazy brain works like your Joy — I get you. P.S. Scones look lovely!

    1. Oh no! Spider eggs and baby spiders! I’m always sort of afraid the spider’s still alive & will crawl back out. I had a black furry one crawl over my lips while I was sleeping once. I. Freaked. Out. I was a jumpy mess for days.

  45. I never turn down a scone! My mom lives miles and miles away so I mailed her macarons. What’s a girl to do?

P.S. I had a spider situation at work. I set my water cup on it….

  46. I’m a scone freak as well.
There is just something about them. Especially when they are hot, I mean it’s like an explosion of deliciousness if your mouth.
I love going to afternoon tea and the scones are by far my favorite part.
This recipe looks amazing, can’t wait to try it.

  47. Scones are my favorite sweet treat. These look delicious and I can’t wait to make a batch. Thanks.

  48. These blackberry scones look delicious. Just bought some blackberries. Will try your recipe this week. Love the colors of the fabrics and the props you used . Looks very french. Thanks Joy for sharing with us.

  49. When my husband is home, he is the designated spider killer. But when he is not, I have resorted to various other means. I have thrown more than one shoe across a room or at a ceiling (ah, the joys of living in the south) trying to hit a spider than I can’t bear to get any closer to. Alternatives, train your cat to be a spider hunter. Which is also fairly effective.

  50. Wow… I love how pretty the scones look on the tiered platter. Lavender is such an underused herb. Pretty sure it went very well with blackberries. Nice!

  51. Before I even read the line about the 3-tiered stand I was thinking, WOW That stand is gorgeous! And lo and behold, it’s a DIY…wow!

The lavender-blackberry combo is no doubt amazing. And yes, please write a whole book about biscuits and scones…and muffins, cakes, and cookies :)

  52. What a lucky mom! My brother, a guy that fought bad guys in Afghanistan, has an a huge fear of spiders too. He said there’s too many legs on them and that just creeps him out. I have a similar phobia to rodents. If have a heart attack if I saw one in my house right in front of me. Yikes!

  53. These look delicious! I’m wondering if I can make them the day before, up to the point of having rolled them out and cut them into rounds? Is it possible to get to that point, put them in the fridge, and bake them the next day? Thanks, Joy!

  54. I am terribly scared of spiders myself too. But then the children came. And somehow, when I am alone with them, I am suddenly able to face the spider and kick it out of the door (sometimes I splash them. That’s really bad, I know. But sometimes it feels like a fight between the spider and me and I am sure not going to lose!).

When there is another adult around, though, I crawl back into my corner and let them fix it. There is so much I can handle, you know?

The scones look delicious by the way. I figure it’s time for breakfast!

  55. Lovely scones! :) I can almost smell the lavender… Yum.

And bad news for you – the fear of spiders never disappears. But don’t be affraid, you will learn to control it just for the few seconds you need to “save” your baby from some huge disgusting spider. My Mum could talk about this for hours ;)

  56. Wow wow wow.these are what I want to bake! Although,am not sure if I’ll get my hands on lavender here in Kuwait…I’ll save it for a summer in the UK.look and sound fabulous!

  57. Yes, Joy, you CAN totally write a whole cookbook of biscuits and scones. You can write that cookbook, then I will buy that cookbook, and then I will eat that cookbook.

  58. Love blackberries and love lavender. Do you have blackberries in California at this time of year? Ours in England don’t come into season until end of summer.
